The Vinicius Junior story has produced more headlines in nine days than Arsenal's two actual signings combined, and most of those headlines contradict each other. So this desk did what it exists to do: traced every claim to its origin, graded every outlet, and sorted the whole saga into three piles. What is verified. What is reported and contested. What is denied. Here is the audit, dated 3 August.

What is verified

Four things are solid. His Real Madrid contract runs to 30 June 2027, meaning this is its final year, which is the entire engine of the story. Arsenal's interest is real: David Ornstein broke it on 25 July with the line that the idea has approval at all levels of the club, and BBC Sport followed with Arteta so smitten that Vinicius is viewed internally as the number one target, with the biggest contract in Arsenal's history prepared. And Madrid's own position, per ESPN's sourcing: their renewal offer stands at 20m euros a season net, they consider it final, and they would rather sell than lose him free in 2027. Interest, contract clock, and a seller's dilemma. All verified.

How a valuation became a bid

Now the famous £120m. Trace it and it dissolves. The number matches Transfermarkt's valuation, 140m euros, converted to sterling. Fan sites and aggregators dressed the valuation as a package Arsenal are considering, and it travelled. But no tier-one outlet has ever reported a £120m Arsenal bid, and every real number sits higher: BBC Sport says £125m to £130m would be the minimum, AS quotes Madrid's price at 150m euros, and Sport had 160m euros as non-negotiable in late July. More to the point, Real Madrid say no offer of any size has been received, and no tier-one outlet disputes that. The bid does not exist. The database number does.

What is denied, and by whom

The personal-terms claim got the loudest denials. A fan account with 380,000 followers declared terms agreed in principle on 31 July; within a day his entourage denied it through Radio Marca, his agents denied it again through AS, and Ornstein settled it at tier one: no agreement exists, though one would be expected quickly if the player ever chose Arsenal. The Independent's more careful version, an outline of a personal deal with image rights as the sticking point, sits between the two, unconfirmed. And Roc Nation's furious statement calling coverage fake, damaging and libellous deserves its own exhibit: it names no claim and denies no specific thing, which makes it compatible with everything above. The desk's favourite artefact is Goal's headline that Mourinho confirmed Vinicius will join Real Madrid soon. The actual quote was about players returning to training on Monday.

The verdict

The pattern is mechanical: every escalation in this saga started at fan or mid-tier outlets and was contradicted within a day at tier one or by the people involved. Fabrizio Romano, the loudest transfer voice alive, has said exactly one on-record word about it, asked directly whether Vinicius signs for Arsenal: no. So the desk's position, labelled as a reading: the interest is real, board-approved and expensively prepared; the deal this window is unlikely, perhaps one chance in five, because the player's stated preference is renewal, Madrid control the clock, and no offer has been made. What changes that: an actual bid reported at tier one, a breakdown in renewal talks, or an announcement. This page updates as the story moves, and it will say which pile every new claim belongs in.
