CGPA to percentage

Formula: Overall indicative percentage of marks = 9.5 × CGPA. Source: CBSE Circular No. 24, 28 May 2010.

Which formula applies to you

There is no single national formula for turning a CGPA into a percentage. Each board and university publishes its own, usually in its examination regulations or on the back of the grade sheet. The calculator includes only formulas taken from the body's own published document, each cited below. If your university is not listed, choose "My university's own formula" and enter the numbers from your grade sheet or regulations.

All the formulas here work on a CGPA out of 10. A grade point average on a 4-point or 5-point scale needs a different conversion, which this calculator does not do.

CBSE Class 10: CGPA x 9.5

CBSE introduced grading for Class 10 from the 2009-10 academic year, and its grade sheets showed a CGPA in place of marks. CBSE Circular No. 24, 28 May 2010states: "Subject wise indicative percentage of marks = 9.5 x GP of the subject" and "Overall indicative percentage of marks = 9.5 x CGPA". A CGPA of 10 is therefore 95%, and 8.2 is 77.9%.

The same circular says the CGPA excludes the additional sixth subject. CBSE calls the result an indicative percentage: it is an equivalence, not the marks actually scored. The same multiplier turns the grade point of a single subject into that subject's indicative percentage.

VTU: two formulas, depending on your regulations

Visvesvaraya Technological University changed its formula. VTU B.E./B.Tech Regulations 2018-19, clause 18OB 7.1, effective from the 2018-19 academic year, gives Percentage = (CGPA - 0.75) x 10, with the example of a CGPA of 8.20 giving 74.5%. VTU B.E./B.Tech Regulations 2022, clause 22OB 6.7, which apply to students admitted from 2022-23 onwards, give Percentage = CGPA x 10, with the example of 8.20 giving 82.0%.

VTU has issued other regulations as well, so check which ones you were admitted under; your grade card or the regulations document names them. Under the 2022 regulations a final percentage of 70 or more is First Class with Distinction, 60 to below 70 is First Class, and 50 to below 60 is Second Class.

Anna University: CGPA x 10

Anna University Academic Regulations 2025 (affiliated institutions, B.E./B.Tech), clause 21.10 apply to B.E. and B.Tech students admitted to non-autonomous affiliated colleges from 2025-26. They say the percentage of marks printed on the consolidated grade sheet is worked out as CGPA x 10. Autonomous colleges set their own regulations, and earlier regulations may say something different, so check the document that applies to you.

What the calculator does not do

The result is not an official conversion. When an employer, a university or an embassy asks for a percentage, many ask for a conversion certificate from your own university, and that certificate is the figure that counts. The calculator does not work out a CGPA or SGPA from your grades and credits, and it does not convert grades from a 4-point or 5-point scale.

A percentage is shown with every digit the formula produces, without rounding. When converting a percentage back to a CGPA, the answer is rounded to two decimal places, and the exact working is shown underneath.

How do I convert CGPA to percentage?

Use the formula of the board or university that awarded the CGPA. For a CBSE Class 10 CGPA, multiply by 9.5: a CGPA of 8.2 is 77.9%. Under the VTU 2022 and Anna University 2025 regulations, multiply by 10: 8.2 is 82%. Under the VTU 2018 regulations, subtract 0.75 and then multiply by 10: 8.2 is 74.5%.

Is the 9.5 formula used by every university?

No. The 9.5 multiplier was published by CBSE for its Class 10 grade sheets. Universities set their own rules, and many multiply by 10 or subtract a fixed amount first. Your grade sheet or your university's regulations give the formula that applies to you. If it is not listed here, choose "My university's own formula" and enter it.

What is 8.5 CGPA in percentage?

80.75% under the CBSE formula (8.5 x 9.5), 85% under the VTU 2022 and Anna University 2025 formulas (8.5 x 10), and 77.5% under the VTU 2018 formula ((8.5 - 0.75) x 10).

How do I convert a percentage to CGPA?

Reverse the formula: divide the percentage by the multiplier, then add back anything that was subtracted. Under the CBSE formula, 85% is 85 / 9.5 = 8.947, or 8.95 to two places. Under the VTU 2018 formula, 74.5% is 74.5 / 10 + 0.75 = 8.2.
