How each answer is worked out

A percentage of a number is the number multiplied by the percentage and divided by 100. To find what percentage one number is of another, divide the first by the second and multiply by 100. The percentage change is the difference between the new and the old value, divided by the old value and multiplied by 100. To increase a number by a percentage, multiply it by one plus the percentage divided by 100. A negative percentage gives a decrease.

How do I work out 20% of a number?

Multiply the number by 20 and divide by 100. For example, 20% of 150 is 150 × 20 ÷ 100 = 30.

How do I work out a percentage increase?

Subtract the old value from the new value, divide the result by the old value and multiply by 100. A rise from 120 to 150 is (150 − 120) ÷ 120 × 100 = 25%.

How do I take a percentage off a price?

Multiply the price by one minus the percentage divided by 100. With 25% off, a price of 80 becomes 80 × 0.75 = 60. In the calculator above, enter −25 in the last line.
