What everyone is searching for. Explained.

Compress PDF to 200 KB

Target size
KB
How the PDF is made smaller

Each page is drawn as an image and saved as a JPEG, and the pages are then put together as a new PDF. The tool lowers the image quality, and then the resolution, until the whole file fits within the size you chose, and it keeps the highest quality that fits. Page sizes stay the same, so the document prints at its original dimensions.

What the tool cannot do

Because every page becomes an image, the text in the new PDF cannot be selected, searched or read by a screen reader, and links and form fields no longer work. This suits scanned documents and files prepared for an upload limit. It is not suitable where the text must remain accessible or editable. A long document may not fit within a small limit, because below a certain resolution the text becomes unreadable. The tool stops at that point and shows the smallest size it reached. Password-protected PDFs cannot be opened.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. Your browser opens and compresses the PDF on your own device, and the tool does not send it to us or to anyone else. Like the rest of this site, the page loads advertising and analytics scripts.

Why did the tool not reach the size I chose?

The size of the result depends on the number of pages. Each page needs a minimum amount of data to stay readable, so a document with many pages cannot always be reduced to a limit such as 100 KB. Splitting the document, or choosing a larger size, will usually resolve this.

Will the compressed PDF be accepted by an application portal?

The tool keeps the file at or below the size you choose, which is the usual requirement. A portal can have other rules, such as a maximum number of pages or a required file name, so check the instructions on the form.
